Student Spotlight: Marguerite Mosher
Picture this scenario and think about if you or anyone you know can relate to this: you go off to college. You take a few classes, find what you’re interested in, maybe you even choose a major you think you’re going to like. But then you realize one day that the major you picked really isn’t what you want to do anymore. Sound familiar? I know this happened to me. Another student that went through this situation is Marguerite Mosher.
Marguerite is a Sophomore here at SUNY Potsdam who is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Wilderness Education. When she started at Potsdam, this wasn’t the case. When Marguerite arrived on campus, she was a chemistry major. While chemistry is a great fit for some, Marguerite decided fairly soon into her time here that chemistry was not the major for her. The question then that Marguerite had was “What do I do with this information?” Marguerite had an interest in Wilderness Education, but thought of it only as a niche, so she wasn’t sure what to do. Then, Marguerite had an idea.
As Marguerite is part of the Honors Program (A brand run by our friend Tom here at the Center for Applied Learning), and also has a friend currently partaking in the Disney Program, she was familiar with the Center for Applied Learning. Marguerite ended up coming in and making a meeting with one of our Career Coaches, Julie Johnson. Marguerite and Julie met extensively multiple times. During these meetings, Marguerite’s college career drastically changed course.
Marguerite had a few different ideas for her major and minor that needed to be sorted through. Marguerite also had discussed her interest in Wilderness Education. Julie ended up talking with Marguerite about her Wilderness Education interest, and they ended up finding out that that interest could absolutely be way more than just a niche. Marguerite ended up getting all of the information she needed to change her major from chemistry to psychology, with that key minor on Wilderness Education. She is currently working towards that degree today.
When asked what she’d be doing if she didn’t come to the Center for Applied Learning, Marguerite say she still would have dropped her chemistry major. But she says she’d be having a tough time, and also wouldn’t have known what she was going to do. She emphasizes how the Center for Applied Learning substantially helped her get onto the path she’s on now.
If Marguerite could give one piece of advice to all students, she would tell everyone that has even half of a doubt about their current career path, definitely find and go to their campus Career Services Office! What a great piece of advice. Our Career Services Office is right in Crumb Library in the Center for Applied Learning. If you’re feeling unsure about anything having to do with your career or choice of major/minor, come see us! As Marguerite will tell you, it could change your entire career path!
